Overview
The department has just completed two decades as an independent department of Psychiatry in KMC, Mangalore. In these last two decades, our achievements and size have grown significantly. Currently, we have one Professor, two Associate Professors, two Assistant Professors, one Senior Grade Lecturer, and three Senior residents.
We teach Psychiatry to Under-graduates in their V & VIII semester. Students also undergo two weeks each of compulsory and optional psychiatry posting during their internship training. Psychology for BASLP, BPT & BSc Nursing courses is also taught. For the last six years, the department has been running post-graduate DNB Psychiatry training for National Board of Examinations. A lot of research activities in Psychiatry including ICMR UG Medical projects are also conducted.
Consultation on inpatient & outpatient basis are rendered and routine comprehensive assessments are conducted. The department's psychiatric intervention comprises both Pharmacological and non-Pharmacological interventions which are tailored considering the unique requirements of the client. The department also regularly conducts public awareness programs in Psychiatry to educate the public regarding Mental Health Care.

One of the disciplines which build and enhances the bridge between the two is Psychiatry. Psychiatry is an applied branch that enables to understand mental health and illnesses. It contributes to the knowledge and also has a very wide and dynamic application value. This field strives to explain and define, understand, categorize the disorders, and determine the best treatments.
The medical specialty of psychiatry is always up against the adjustable to the complexity of the human brain and human behavior. Both biological factors and environmental factors contribute to symptoms of distress to despair and this scenario varies from person to person. Both psychotherapy and drugs are effective in most of the psychiatric disorders, and often a combination of the two works best, although the effects kick in on different timetables they are best complimentary in intervene and long-lasting effects.
