Believe it or not, but when Tata Indica was released in 1998, it was a monumental failure – and most people asked Ratan Tata to sell the Tata Motors subsidiary. One of the companies which suggested this idea was Ford, and they made a proposition to buy the subsidiary.

Following this, Ratan Tata headed to the States to meet Bill Ford, the chairman of Ford Motors. But the meeting turned out to be a disaster, as Bill Ford insulted Ratan Tata by questioning his decision to enter the passenger car business. However, Ratan Tata did not give up. He used this insult as an inspiration and took his company to great heights.

Cut to 2008, when the tables turned and Ford was on its way to bankruptcy. Tata made an offer to purchase the Jaguar-Land Rover luxury car brand from them at a price of $2.3 billion. How times change!
